Trying out the templar

Hey all,

I'm currently playing as the templar (or as I like to call diaper booty), and I'm curious as to what a good build would be for my noob templar.

I just started today so I'm not even that far in, might edit it as I go along. I have glacial hammer with the starting support element gem

I also have purifying flame, but not 100% sure if it's worth it or if it's any good (just got it). I know I do not have many skill gems, but I am trying to find the same colored gems as my armor

This is a new character on standard league, try not to go too harsh on me for I am a noob. Thank you.

Hello :)
Nice to see a new player in PoE1.

First thing - you need to specialise. In other words, you can't mix spells with attacks, because you can't reach satisfying damage in both. Same is true for skills - one skill with 5 support gems is better than six separate skills, as they would lack damage. Pick a skill or playstyle you like and specialize in it.

There's a great video [click] exploring virtually all aspects of PoE for beginners. It's long but worth it.

Regarding builds, I'd like to recommend totem builds. They're safe, because you place totems casting spells for you (kinda like Diablo 2 Assassin's traps). Until you learn mechanics, it's highly recommended to follow build guide, you will save yourself frustration of constantly dying.
Try Stormburst Totems, it's a solid choice, not requiring expensive items.
